There is a common scam happening in recent days. It involves the victim receiving a text message from someone that appears to be from the Superior Court of California, telling you that you have an outstanding traffic violation associated with your vehicle. They tell you to scan the QR code on the page and pay, or you will have to deal with a lot of different consequences. The purpose of this scam is to try to trick someone into scanning their QR code that probably leads to a random site that may steal your data or do something else bad. This may scare some, but don’t worry, there are many ways to tell if it is real or not: First off, look and see where and when the violation was issued, you may not even live or have been to that area then, which immediately invalidates the text. The photo also never states my name, telling me they don’t actually know who I am. Also, it is very uncommon for courts to just send a random picture without context. Use your intuition and don’t open links you believe may be scams!
